Phase 2 Games
Free online games for Phase Two of the Letters and Sounds phonics programme. Click on a picture to play the
game.
Initial Sound Match Games
To play these memory games, click a card on the top row to turn over a letter card then click a
card on the bottom row to turn over a picture card. If the object in the picture starts with the
same sound as the letter, you have found a match. If not, the cards will turn over so you can have
another go.
Buried Treasure
In this game you can choose which letters you want to work with so it can be used even in the
very early stages of Phase 2. Click to get a new coin then sound out the word. Drag the coin into
the treasure chest if it's a real word and into the bin if it's not. This game would work well on
an interactive whiteboard and is great for individual play too. Phonics Play Phase 2.
Sound Buttons Blending
Click on the tabs to choose which sets of letters you want to use. Click on the letters and drop
them into the phoneme frame. As you click each letter you will hear its sound. Once you've placed
the letters into the frame you can click the red buttons to hear each sound. This is a really
useful resource for the interactive whiteboard from Kent Ed.
The Dragons' Den
In this game you have to sort the eggs. Real words belong to the green dragon and made up words
go to the red dragon. Get it right and the dragon will breath fire. Get it wrong and he will only
be able to puff smoke. Phonics Play Phase 2.
Interactive Bingo
When you start the game you will be given the option to print off the PDF bingo cards. There are
four games to choose from for Phase 2, each with different sets of letters. Once you have got the
cards printed (and probably laminated), you can play the game with the whole class using an
interactive whiteboard. Click the "pull" button and the letters for one of the words will spin into
place. From ICT Games.
Picnic on Pluto
Obb, the yellow alien, likes to eat fake words and Bob, the blue alien, likes to eat real words.
Sound out and blend the words, decide whether they're real or fake, then drag them to the correct
alien. Teaching Ideas and printable resources for this game from Phonics Play.
Letters and Sounds Phoneme Pop
Choose the set of phonemes you want to play with first of all. One of them will show up in the
bottom right of the screen and you will hear its sound. All you have to do is click on the bubbles
with the required letter, trying to make sure that they fall into the grey catching zone. Every 30
seconds you will get a new phoneme to catch. From ICT Games.
Pick a Picture
This provides practice in sounding out words using all of the letters in Phase 2. Sound out the
word then click the matching picture. There are some useful teaching ideas and printable resources to go with this game from Phonics
Play.
Ladybird Lander
In this game from ICT Games you click on the ladybird letters (single consonants and short
vowels only), then click on a flower. The aim is to make words and practise blending. When you have
made a word by putting a ladybird on each flower you can click the red buttons to hear the
sounds.
Foam Phonemes
Use the arrow to rotate the wheel on the right to see different sets of letters. Then just click
the phonemes you want and they will be fired out of the cannon to land on the water. Here you can
drag them into position to make a word. Phonemes are sounded out when you click on them. Kent
